Custom lithophane service: Have any image or graphic turned into one of our high resolution lithophanes.

Your custom lithophane will be created using our process that results in an excellent high resolution 3D lithophane that really stands out from what you might have seen elsewhere.

Please note, to get the most out of this service you need to create an account with us(although it is not required). With an account you can upload your images to be processed as well as follow the order and download the 3D printable stl file once we’ve created it. You can create an account by clicking on “Login/Register” link at the top of the page, or create one during the checkout process. Again, it’s not necessary to do this, but you’ll get the best experience if you do.

Your lithophane can be created from any image of reasonable resolution. We usually work with images of about 1500 x 1500 pixels and above, but if you have a lower quality image we can probably work some magic with it (there may be extra costs involved if we have to do extensive restoration work/clean-up on the images, but this is rare).

We can make these any size, but by default unless you ask for something else they are generally around 160mm(6.3 inches) in length, with the height dependant on the dimension of your uploaded image. If you want it bigger or smaller, just add a note on your order or contact us afterwards and we can take care of it(there’s no extra cost for this).

You can of course scale these up or down in your 3D printer slicing software, but for best results it’s a good idea to let us know what size you want.

How to order:

Simple add this item to your basket and checkout. During the checkout process you’ll be asked to create an account when completing the order. Once the order payment is completed and you’re logged into your account go to “My Account” and select “Orders“. You will see the order in here, click it and there should be an “Upload” button. Select your image, upload and we’ll take it from there. There will also be a link in your order confirmation email to the upload page.

If you don’t want to create an account that’s fine, just reply to the order confirmation email with the image or a link to the image you want processed. Alternatively you can message us through the Contact page before ordering and we can discuss your needs.

Your lithophane will be ready to download within 12-24 hours. It’s normally a lot quicker, but as this is a manual process and not automated it takes time to get it just right.

Versions/sizes available:

Available – Download version for printing at home. You will receive an email with detailed instructions and a link to the file.

Default Size: 160mm(6.3 inches) wide, with the height being variable depending on the shape/aspect of your picture(most have a height of about 90-100mm or 3.54-3.93 inches). If you want a larger(or smaller) lithophane please contact us.

What’s a lithophane anyway?

A lithophane is a three-dimensional image that changes according to the intensity and quality of the light striking it. The light areas are very thin, allowing more light to pass through, while the thicker areas appear darker.
Lithophanes date back to the 1800s, when they were traditionally carved from bees wax, molded in plaster and then cast and fired in porcelain. Around the same time period photography was invented as a simpler way to capture an image, but now 3D printing enables you to experience the best of both worlds.
